Verse for Retreat: But the fruit of Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-25)
Description: Love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. We recognize these as the fruits of the spirit yet for many of us this is not reality. All too often we find ourselves encumbered with anxiety, depression, fear, anger, jealousy and strife. These destructive behaviors are not the problem. They are fruits of the problem. The real problem is our hearts. Our sinful hearts give rise to thoughts such as:
“I must have _______ to live a meaningful life”
“You must give me _______or I will be angry or cold towards you”
“If only ______ would change, I would be satisfied or content”
“If I don’t get _______, then I become angry, anxious or depressed”
Thoughts like these for the Christian are glaring beacons that we have sat down on someone else’s throne. God’s throne.
Yet we see those destructive behaviors and focus in on changing them. Improving them. Banishing them. It doesn’t work. Moral reformation is not what God’s plan is about.
At the very core of God’s plan for humanity is raising the sinner from death to life through the atoning work of Christ. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
Fruits of the Spirit are by-products of a heart subjugated to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. When we understand “who’s who” in this relationship, God is elevated to His rightful place in our lives. Then, and only then, can we experience the fruits of the Spirit.
Join us as we explore the relationship between our spiritual roots and the good or bad fruit in our lives, as well as the keys to victorious, Spirit-filled living.
